Starting the year off right

I hope everyone enjoyed their New Year’s festivities!

I celebrated with a night of drinks and dancing :)

It was a perfect way to spend the evening, moving on the dance floor with both my good hip and my no-longer-broken one.

The first day of 2013 was spent resting my tired legs, enjoying the fresh January San Francisco air, relishing in good cuddles

and enjoying a new twist on my old favorite, carrot soup.

Dave added ginger to my soup recipe and created a new vibrant and heart warming masterpiece.

On top of the world

at the Top of the Mark.

If you live here, are passing through, or if you are on vacation in San Francisco, you must stop at the historic 19th floor of the Mark Hopkins.

The views are incredible and will simply make you smile at the beauty of the city.

And the drinks will put a smile on your face for another reason – they are delicious.

I recommend the Organic Spring Breeze!

Happy Almost New Year!

The BEST wine ever!

My leftovers from Thursday night’s dinner did not do the job to get me through an extra long day at work.

When I walked through the door around 7pm I was greeted with a large glass of this incredible white wine we purchased on one of our adventures in Napa.

I don’t know if it was the long day, the beautiful weather, the fact that it was Friday evening, but this wine was the best white wine I have ever had! The flavor was so crisp and refreshing! Let’s just say that this bottle was emptied to its last drop that night.

To celebrate the end of the week Dave and I went to our favorite sushi restaurant.

We have made good friends with one of the waitresses and because we dine there often she brought over one of the chef’s latest creations to get our feedback before it goes on the menu.

These Japanese crab cakes were delicious! We can’t wait for them to go on the menu :)

Hope everyone enjoyed their Friday evenings!

G’day Mate

In February of 2008 I stepped onto a Quantas flight from LA to Australia and unloaded my books and crosswords in the seat back pocket in front of me. Little did I know that this pocket belonged to the seat of one of my soon-to-be dearest friends, Vanessa. Vanessa and I studied abroad in Australia for 5 months together, exploring Sydney University, running the streets of the city, vacationing in New Zealand and eventually continuing our friendship back in the states.

Together again last night at the comedy club (2012)

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to be back in her presence during her vacation to the Bay Area with her boyfriend from their home in NYC. Let’s just say that we are two peas in a pod and it always feels great to be back with your counterpart. It’s hard being so far apart from one another, but we shared a wonderful evening over Thai (an old favorite in aussie land) and comedy.

Dave’s brother-in law is one part of the comedy duo, the Sklar Brothers. They were performing at the famous Cobbs Comedy Club, so we of course took our guests to experience a very traditional San Francisco night of comedy.

It was a great day from start to finish, because not only did I get to see people I care for, but I also made up a fabulous new smoothie recipe that I can’t wait to share with you.

Sunshine in a Glass

1/2 a banana

1/2 cup of carrot juice

1 scoop of vanilla protein powder

a few cubes of frozen mango

splash of almond milk

A great color and an even better taste!

Did anyone else reunite with an old friend this weekend?

I know him – he’s on TV

Day one of sugar cleanse:

Honestly, I did not really have any strong craving for anything sweet. In the morning I wanted to dip my spoon into my jar of cookie butter but was able to restrain myself and left the apartment with no regrets.

There was still plenty of snacking to refuel after my 2 mile run and elliptical workout yesterday morning – yes that’s right, I ran 2 miles on the treadmill! But instead of reaching for a sweet treat that would inevitably leave me unsatisfied I ate veggies and hummus and rice cakes, which left me feeling content.

Dinner looked like this because we attended a special meet and greet…

We went downtown to meet the cast of Escape Routes – a reality show that airs at 8pm on Saturday nights on NBC. Our friend Ross is competing to win a Ford Escape and $100,000!! Go #teamyoutube!

There was time to mingle and a question and answer session with the cast.

And a chance to meet the hosts…

Dave with Ijustine - one of the online hosts. She has over 1.4 million twitter followers!

It was fun to see all of these people in person and it was great to hang out with our friend who has been busy with this show for quite some time. It’s so weird to see him on tv or in ads in magazines, but I’m not going to complain about knowing a reality tv star :) Do any of you guys have friends on reality/non reality tv?

TIme for Tuesday – sugar cleanse day two bring it on!

Night at the Museum

Thursday Night – otherwise known as Nightlife at the Academy of Sciences. Dave and I love going to this 21+ open night at the museum and we have been so many times I have lost count. For $12 you get to look at all of the cool permanent displays, listen to music, drink and explore the theme of the night through interactive exhibits.

Last night’s theme was Photography, but we focused on the live animals and the indoor rainforest for a majority of the night.

You walk around this habitat with birds and butterflies.

Rays! There are sharks too :)

Part of the nightlife crew for the evening.

Happy Friday everyone! Who is doing something exciting this weekend?

I scream for ice cream

I finally woke up with an actual appetite on Saturday and after enjoying a banana with peanut butter and a few handfuls of cereal I attempted some exercise. I ran 4 miles on the treadmill and did a few abs and it felt great to sweat again (not due to a virus that is).

(I thought I would share my lovely/vibrant gym outfit with all of you)

One exciting event of the day involved getting rid of this:

And replacing it with this:

Another excitement involved finally finding a lactose-intolerant’s new best friend:

Yes, you have read correctly, this entire pint of Arctic Zero is only 150 calories of deliciousness. I was worried that the texture would be off or that it would have a weird, possibly chemical, aftertaste, but no! The flavor is light but smooth and creamy and I can eat it without ending up writhing in stomach pain and spending the night in the bathroom. YAY!

The rest of the night involved sushi from our favorite sushi spot, Ace Wasabi.

And a concert at the iconic Fillmore!

Not a bad Saturday – what did you do?

Alumni Dinner

Wednesday was the day I remembered I love eggs.

After an arm workout posted by Julie, I came home and made this fantastic egg sandwich:

Sandwich thin

Egg whites

1 tbsp of nutritional yeast

and of course KETCHUP, yum

This, plus leftovers from last night, fueled me for the day.

While it was snowing in the east coast it was warm enough for me to walk all the way home – which is one of my favorite things about San Francisco. You can walk from downtown to the opposite side of the bay within an hour.

Later in the evening I found myself walking again to a friend’s house for a Brandeis Alumni dinner. It was great to see old friends and meet some new people, remembering those four years of college together and discovering where we are now.

We talked over a homemade meal, including pies for dessert :)

Do you attend local alumni events? Have you been to your school (high school/college) reunion?

Yes, last time I checked it was January

Hard to believe that it’s the middle of winter after the day we had yesterday.

Saturday morning I enjoyed the glorious weather and went for a seven mile run. I decided to implement the tricks I learned during my physical therapy session and dedicated my entire run to focusing on my feet placement and overall form. Let’s just say this was not any easy task. I was mentally and physically exhausted after remembering to place my feet underneath of me, striking the ground with the mid section of my foot, and then kicking backwards, step after step.

My knee didn’t give me any trouble and I felt assured that I was not putting strain on it. I could already tell after my run that I was going to be sore today but it was certainly worth it.

It was a late night involving …

Getting together with friends,

attending a classic San Francisco night of comedy,

and watching over 2 and a half hours of stand ups including, this guy:
